FEAR OF A BLACK PLANET is a collection of Black Horror stories in the form of writings, drawings, and paintings. The collection is based on the omnipresence of racism in the artist's life and inspired by the lack of fine art in the Black Horror genre. River's aim for the project is two-fold. First, she wants to articulate a social message about the impacts of racism on the Black psyche by subverting the fear that non-black people harbour towards racialised black people. And second, she wants to create a visceral experience for the audience—she wants non-black people to feel the plight of Black lives, whilst exercising caution in depicting Black trauma, through the visual language of her work.
