Novelty-Negress
/ˈnɒvlti/ˈniːɡrɪs,ˈniːɡrɛs/
1. The ornamental quality of being the only black woman or girl in a white-dominated space.
Novelty-Negress is a social critique on being a black body in a white space. Revealing how the white gaze removes the humanity of black people, by turning them into objects of curiosity, fascination, or shock for personal and/or public entertainment. These works not only narrate instances in which River has been treated as a new or unusual experience, as a novelty, in a plethora of Eurocentric environments. They also open discourse on how Black artists react to being treated as novelties - as objectified subliminal tokens - in contemporary art today.
